GHOSTHUNTER - 35mm SHORT FILM & THE FREDDIE FRANCIS SCHOLARSHIP
This short film project allowed a unique collaboration between the late Freddie Francis B.S.C and myself. During my 3 years at the NFTS I was honoured to be supported by a scholarship in Freddie’s name. He recommended me to the producers of Ghosthunter after they approached him to advise on the film. I was also honoured to work with Freddie’s long time Gaffer the late Maurice Gillett on the project.
During his career Freddie had mastered the use of the Varicon, a device that flashes the negative whilst filming. I opted to try this technique coupled with a 60% bleach bypass. The result would desaturate the colours but produce dense blacks and increased detail.
We were both very pleased with the results - unfortunately due to the low budget nature of the project some film stock purchased and used was over 6 years old and therefore some of the scenes looked underexposed and flat. A lessen learnt - always check the film stock dates if working on old short ends!

“ It’s a hypnotic piece of television, offering an educational, moving and tense experience.”

OUTPOST - s35mm FEATURE FILM - SONY INTERNATIONAL / MATADOR PICTURES / BLACK CAMEL PRODUCTIONS
Shot over 25 days for 1.1 million this low budget action/horror was my fourth feature film as D.O.P. It brought together a group of long time friends - Steve Barker (Dir), Kieran Parker (Prod), Richard Stoddard (Camera Op) and myself, allowing us to prove we could do everything we had talked about for years! More successful than any of us could have expected, the film opened in the Summer of 2008 at the Empire Leicester Square, having been bought by Sony International Pictures. The DVD release being equally popular selling 35,000 copies in its first week. Needless to say we’d like to do another one now!

RESCUE - CUTTING EGDE DOCUMENTARY - CHANNEL 4/TOUCH PRODUCTIONS
“ I wouldn’t have believed it possible but, this film put a human face on the insurance industry.”
Thomas Sutcliffe - The Independent
I spent 3 months after graduating from University researching and writing a pitch for this documentary idea. A former graduate of Portsmouth University had pitched the landmark documentary “Chi Chi The Panda” and I learnt how to structure an idea to a television format based on that pitch. Sending it out to 6 production companies around London Touch Productions called me in for a chat. Originally designed as a 1 x 1 hr Cutting Edge for Channel Four we ended up with so many stories that the Channel agreed to a 2 x 52’ programmes. These films kicked off the new series in 1998 and follow the work of the medical department of a travel insurance company. Thousands of us go abroad every year on holiday and have a great time, but things can go terribly wrong. Powerful and moving, the films follow the medical teams as they set about getting injured or ill holiday-makers home safe and sound.
