GAVIN STRUTHERS

DIRECTOR OF PHOTOGRAPHY

I gravitated to Art and Design at an early age. Learning about light, tone and colour through a love of oil painting and pen drawing. This led to a passion for Photography, being able to develop and print my own images in a darkroom at home.

After studying Graphics, Fine Art & Photography at UCA for two years I acquired a BA (Hons) in Media and Design at Portsmouth University . It was there I discovered Cinematography. After the course I spent a year shooting short films and researching a documentary idea to pitch to Channel Four. It became a two part “Cutting Edge” documentary for the strand in 1997, made through Touch Productions.

That same year I was accepted into the NATIONAL FILM AND TELEVISION SCHOOL. The last of the 3 year course, I graduated in 2000 with an MA in Cinematography. At the NFTS I became the recipient of the FREDDIE FRANCIS B.S.C (Elephant Man, Cape Fear) scholarship - see Press Section and was mentored by the great man until he passed away in 2007.

Although Drama work is my passion Documentary film making remains close to my heart. I shot a RTS award winning documentary entitled ”Your Life in Their Hands” for BBC Specialist Factual in 2004.

Over the last 2 years I have been fortunate enough to work on some fantastic drama including ”Outpost”,  “Garrow’s Law”, “Downton Abbey” and “Endeavour”.
